Zeljko, der sich "Jimmy" nennt, lebt mit seiner aus Herzegowina stammenden Familie in einer kleinen Wohnung in Mannheim. Mit 15 lernt er die Heidelberger Professorin Martha Gruber kennen, bei der seine Mutter putzt. Sie gibt Jimmy einen Ferienjob und sein Denken kreist fortan nur noch um sie, die ihm Zuwendung schenkt, ihn ins Theater einlädt und ihn ernst nimmt und unterstützt.
